Key objective

Mexico City was selected as a recipient of the inaugural Global Cities Fund for Inclusive Pandemic Response, a $1,000,000 initiative to respond to the unmet needs of cities as they support migrants, refugees, and internally displaced people (IDPs) during Covid-19. The objective of the project is to expand municipal income protection program for internally displaced persons while connecting them to national and local social services aimed at helping them settle within the city. Mexico City is using the funds to expand a newly established municipal income protection program to provide direct cash assistance to internally displaced persons while connecting them to national and local social services aimed at helping them settle within the city.

Main activities

The City is identifying 450 people to receive this direct cash assistance, as well as any needed support related to employability, obtaining personal identification, awareness regarding Mexico City’s public health services, and referrals to Mexico City’s robust governmental, civil society and non-profit social services network. Through this project, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and her team will address an immediate and urgent need for Mexico City’s most marginalized residents while also preparing them for the long road ahead.
