Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

Countering all types of exploitation and trafficking of children. This would help child migrants who are often in vulnerable situations and face challenges along routes and upon arrival in communities, including unaccompanied child migrants who can be especially at risk of exploitation or human trafficking.

Providing legal identity for all, including through birth registration. This would help counter statelessness, end patterns of irregularity among migrants, especially among their children, and allow migrants to apply for citizenship or residence permissions and respective rights to which they are entitled. This would also help foster migrants’ inclusion, and help counter human trafficking and organised crime.

Strengthening rule of law and improving access to justice. The SDGs call for stronger and more transparent institutions, inclusive and representative decision-making, and improved access to justice. This would help protect and promote all migrants’ rights, address migrant detention. This would also play a role in addressing the drivers of types of migration, by combatting discrimination, human rights abuses, gender inequalities and more.

Mainstreaming Migration and Displacement into Development Plans/Strategies

Mainstreaming is an established good practice in creating policy coherence for migration and development. With the recognition that migration and displacement affect - and are affected by - policies from a range of policy sectors, the concept of mainstreaming migration has emerged as a process to insert migration as a parameter across different policy areas, through multi-stakeholder and multi-level mechanisms.

Migrant Rights

The extent to which migrants and displaced persons can integrate into society and thus contribute to development is directly linked to the extent to which their rights are guaranteed and upheld. A human rights based approach to migration governance therefore puts migrants and their needs at the forefront and is an effective way to ensure their ability to contribute to development.

Civic Engagement

Civic engagement of migrants and displaced persons in their territories of destination is crucial to ensure that their needs and interests are considered across policies that will affect or are developed specifically for them. Lack of such engagement can lead to the development of incoherent and ineffective policies. In addition, inclusion of migrants in policy-making helps building trust between policy-makers, migrant communities and other parts of the population and can enhance migrants’ ownership and willingness to cooperate with and support the implementation of the policies.
