MAKING SENSE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MIGRATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Date 15 August 2018, 12:00 - 13:00
Location Arendal Bibliotek Auditoriet, Torvet 6 in Arendal, Norway
UNDP, IOM – The UN Migration Agency, and the network of UN affiliated organisations in Norway invite you to a panel discussion on Making sense of the relationship between migration and sustainable development
Migration is increasingly recognized as a significant factor for the achievement of all three pillars of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. However, migration must be managed through well-founded policies in order to fully harness its potential to benefit societies and migrants, and to contribute to sustainable development and poverty reduction.
This panel discussion aims to offer a better understanding of the links between international migration and development, and to discuss how local, national and international policies can be designed in order to maximise migration’s potential for sustainable development.
For the past two years, the global community of states, organisations, civil society and other relevant actors have worked towards the first document that aims to govern migration on a global scale; the Global Compact of Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The agreement, which will be adopted in December 2018, specifies that: “Migration has been part of the human experience throughout history, and we recognize that it is a source of prosperity, innovation and sustainable development in our globalized world, and that these positive impacts can be optimized by improving migration governance.”
