Brief description of the initiative

POURAKHI (meaning self-reliant), is an NGO of women migrant workers established in 2003, aims to ensure the rights of women migrant workers and their families in the entire process of migration. This organization focuses its work on women migrant worker’s concerns, regarding issues that arise at the different stages of migration, namely pre-employment, pre-departure, employment and post-arrival (including reintegration ) through support programs. Vision An enabling environment where all Nepalese women migrant workers enjoy all their rights. (To ensure Safe migration) Mission Proactively work to ensure the rights of women migrant workers in the entire phase of foreign employment through the processes of information, counselling, advocacy and empowerment.

Results and lessons learned

  • Pourakhi conducted a weekly radio program on foreign employment
  • Established 24 h hotline telephone service on information regarding safe migration.
  • Established information centre on migration.
  • Pourakhi provided legal services to migrant women workers and their families as well as potential migrant workers.
  • POURAKHI built and improved the capacity of many returnee migrant women workers by conducting and organizing various trainings.
  • POURAKHI supports returnee migrants and their families through a reintegration programs aiming to lead dignify life. Pourakhi provides income generation programmes for returnee migrant workers and their families. Pourakhi conduct a pilot project with the support of UNwomen in three districts (kaski , sunsari and Kathmandu) . Pourakhi provided 700 migrants and their families an entrepreneurship training out of 700 – 608 became entrepreneur and established small scale business and also able to earn approximately 8000 to 16000 rs per month. This program is very successful and the government of Nepal or foreign employment promotion board has replicate the same program and expand in three districts (Makwanpur, Chitwan and Kathmandu) in 2012.
  • POURAKHI is running an emergency shelter home for the returnee migrant  women worker that is rescued and are not able to get reintegrated with the family immediately.

Main objectives

a)          To advocate the rights of women migrant workers with Nepal’s Government/Nepal, and other concerned stakeholders to develop and implement plans and policies for creating an enabling environment for foreign employment and empowerment and empowerment of women migrant workers.

b)         To provide information and consultancy on foreign employment to migrant women workers and their families.

c)          To act as a pressure group for the implementation of existing domestic laws and the ratification and implementations of international instruments concerned with the protection and promotion of the rights of migrant women workers.

d)         To raise awareness on safe migration and the rights of migrant women workers and to advocate with different stakeholders.
