I Have No Words: Irregular Migration Routes and Communication

Short title

I Have No Words: Irregular Migration Routes and Communication

Start date - End date

Thu, 07/30/2009 to Sat, 01/29/2011

Brief description of the initiative

The project informed migrants on which agencies they need to contact in the country of destination in case of problems. A specific emphasis on women and girl migrants was put into place as they may suffer from a dual vulnerability (as migrants and being women/girls) leading to phenomena of serious concern such as human trafficking.

Results and lessons learned

Partners are in the process of completing their comprehensive and wide-ranging multi-disciplinary research project. The results of the project aim to produce reliable information on migrants’ rights and to inform on the dangers linked to irregular migration channels. Production of a documentary used for awareness-raising is also under way. An information booklet for irregular migrants in Italy, delivering information on protection mechanisms and assistance services available, will also be distributed soon.

Main objectives

The project informed migrants on which agencies they need to contact in the country of destination in case of problems. A specific emphasis on women and girl migrants was put into place as they may suffer from a dual vulnerability (as migrants and being women/girls) leading to phenomena of serious concern such as human trafficking. Special attention was also paid to supporting refugees, asylum seekers, separated migrant children and stranded migrants. A booklet has been produced to guide migrants' access to administrative and legal institutions and services in Italy through which they can address their complaints and grievances and seek redress in the host and home countries.

Country

Algeria

Main activities

1) A research study on Human Smuggling into Italy: Origins, Dynamics and Stereotyped Perceptions in a Comparative and Interdisciplinary Perspective; 2) A traveling exhibition in origin and transit countries: a photographic/text work will depict the places and memories of tragedies; 3) The Creation of an audiovisual documentary on the dynamics and reality of human trafficking from and through the Maghreb to Europe to enable the broad diffusion of knowledge of the risks of irregular migration; 4) An information booklet providing information on existing protection mechanisms, assistance services and laws. The awareness-raising campaigns used the major existing channels of diffusion to ensure good coverage: the Italian satellite channel Rai Med, broadcast in Italian and Arabic, the Italian portal and newsletter for immigrants "Stranieri in Italia" and the Italian network implemented by Caritas Migrantes.

Main beneficiaries

The main beneficiaries are: potential individual migrants in countries of origin and transit and their families, vulnerable groups such as asylum seekers and minors, as well as origin and diaspora communities targeted through civil society associations.
