December 18 is the international advocacy and resource centre on the human rights of migrant workers. We promote an approach to migration policies that is based on existing international and regional human rights instruments and mechanisms.
Interns play an important role in the projects and ongoing work of December 18. They are offered an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the different facets of working in an international NGO that is active at the international as well as European level.
December 18 is looking for a motivated Intern from September to December 2010. The Intern will work directly with the consultant of December 18 on our campaign “It’s Time to Ratify” on the following issues: the UN Migrant Workers Convention, the European Platform on Migrant Workers Rights (EPMWR) and December 18 multilingual Website.
The Convention constitutes the broadest framework in international law for the protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families and provides guidance to States on how to respect the rights of migrants while developing and implementing labour migration policies. The Migrant Workers Convention is one of the nine core United Nations human rights instruments.
Specific tasks include
Monitoring the campaign and its results
Help in the preparation of meetings and events such as advocacy event, press conferences ...
Assist with the updating of the December 18 website, especially with respect to migrants’ rights related developments within the UN system
Assist in researching for and drafting of December 18 documents (Newsletter, Press releases...)
Depending on the workload at December 18, additional tasks might be assigned.
The intern will work in an international environment with team members being based in around the world.
Educational background in international human rights (law) and/or international relations
Strong interest in migration issues
Fluency in English (mother tongue level)
Working knowledge of French or Spanish is an asset.
Good organizational skills
Able to work independently
Strong writing and computer skills
