The project is just beginning implementation now.
The project will develop a social network linking migrants in Spain and their families in Ecuador, focusing on organic coffee production and the financial mechanisms that sustain it.
The main objective is to strengthen the chain of coffee as a local alternative to improve the quality of life of small producers in Espindo, Quilanga and Gonzanamá, thus mitigating the migratory flows.
a) encouraging investment of migrant remittances in coffee production, in order to generate income and thereby foster local development as an alternative to migration to other countries; b) helping Ecuadorian migrants in Spain develop a return plan which includes economic reinsertion in Ecuador through participation in the production chain of organic coffee; and c) working with Ecuadorian credit and savings cooperatives to lower the cost of sending remittances from Spain and to create rural small-business opportunities at the local level, especially for women and the youth.
The direct beneficiaries would be: 1,000 families in the Loja province participating in coffee production and sale; 200 Ecuadorian migrants in Spain trained on how to channel remittances for productive investment; at least 150 migrants receiving specialized advice on insertion in the European labour market; at least 3 small coffee producer organizations strengthened and prepared for associative trade; at least 3 savings cooperatives granting credits for rural small-business opportunities, prioritizing women married to migrants living in Spain; a ‘Social Productive Network' set up by Loja migrants living in Spain so as to consolidate the production chain and export of Loja organic coffee.
